Hidden Orchestra Wingbeats “For as long as I can remember, I have found that what draws me to a piece of music can often be one small detail – a single characteristic or maybe a fleeting moment of beautiful sound or compelling rhythm… So, for a Hidden Orchestra composition I often create lots of individual source pieces – orchestral sketches, drum arrangements, solo instrumental improvisations, manipulated field recordings – and pick out bits to reinterpret as samples with which to write a full track, combining and arranging them to create an imaginary orchestra”. - Joe Acheson Tru Thoughts LP
Quantic Atlantic Modulations Atlantic Modulations’ brings together reworkings of Will “Quantic” Holland’s critically acclaimed album "Atlantic Oscillations", featuring remixes from Sampology, Dan Shake, Alfa Mist and Quantic himself. EP opener "You Used To Love Me ft. Denitia (Selva Remix)" epitomises Holland's relocation to Brooklyn, building his new recording studio 'Selva' and taking up a bi-monthly residency at 'Good Room' (NY); with the essence of the NY club scene radiating through the Selva Remix. A key figure in London's burgeoning jazz scene, talented pianist, producer and composer Alfa Mist reworks "You Used To Love Me" with the addition of melancholic brass and keys, giving the original a contemporary jazz twist. "September Blues" is granted the heavyweight house treatment by Moodymann-stamped-seal-of-approval, Dan Shake. Adding his well-loved mesh of sparky acid synths, Brazilian samba percussion and itchy groove-funk to the song, fuelling "September Blues" into a peak-time contagious weapon. Brisbane-based producer, DJ, and Worldwide FM resident, Sampology gives "Orquidea" featuring Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist Sly5thAve, a delicate touch of tropical-disco and dub-variants, slowing down the brass horns and distorting the bedrock of the track. ‘Atlantic Oscillations’ marked the return of world-renowned British producer Quantic with his most cohesive and intricate album to date; "Atlantic Modulations" cements that release, contextualising it on the dancefloor. The Seshen Dive / 4AM Dive / 4AM is the latest outing from San Francisco Bay Area-based sixpiece, The Seshen. The 7” outlines the steps the group has made since their critically acclaimed sophomore album in 2016, both as a band and as individuals. Side A opens with distorted four-to-the-floor chomper, Dive. Aggressive yet danceable, gritty but somehow unstoppable, Dive is inspired the profound need for change, catalysed through the somnambulant Larry Heard-esque bassline meshed to the warped tones of Lalin’s vocals. While in contrast on side B, 4AM untethers the listener by exploring a sense of spaciousness, flourishing the sparseness, distracting with moving snippets of delicate production. TRU THOUGHTS 7"
Rodney P The Next Chapter / Recognise Me “The Next Chapter” is both personal and cultural. It’s a reintroduction to the hugely influential legend while laying out the next chapter in his respected career. “Recognise Me (I’m An African)” see’s Rodney reconnect on a deeper level with his West-Indian heritage as a second-generation immigrant. Referencing Ghanaian politician and revolutionary Kwame Nkrumah, Rodney explores themes of identity and the ideology of pan-Africanism (the idea that the destiny of all people of African descent, depends on the fate of the continent of Africa). A pioneer who inspired a generation of hip-hop and grime MCs with his home-grown reggae-influenced flow, Rodney P set the scene ablaze back in the late ‘80s with the seminal group London Posse. Since then, he has had a rich and varied career as a radio and television personality, while musically collaborating with the likes of Bjork, Skinnyman, Omar, MJ Cole and countless others.
