Leifur James Angel In Disguise The highly anticipated second full length album from the experimental producer and composer Leifur James. Driving, melancholic electronica, ‘Wise Old Man’ is a nod to what can be expected of James’ second album, Angel In Disguise, showcasing a more experimental side to his production. Traversing through musicality, progressive synths and introspection, this first single unveils the producer’s distinct sound with disorientated vocals; speaking of the interplay between reason and emotion, the lyrics repeat “Wise old man in my brain, soul bursting through my veins”, opening the gates to this captivating electronically steered opus. KENNEBEC Departure Based out of a Portland and working as a teacher, film composer, and mentorship under Mark Orton (Nebraska, Tin Hat.) Eric Phillips’ musical vision for Kennebec – a catalogue of his time spent in the Olympic Peninsula – led to him producing ‘Departure’ in Spring 2017. It took two long years of patient, daily labour to complete the album, during which time influences such as Studio Ghibli soundtrack composer Joe Hisaishi, cult hip hop artist Nujabes as well as Australia’s Taylor Crawford and Tycho’s ambient electronica began to permeate the soundworld. On February 14th 2020, Night Time Stories, sister label of acclaimed Late Night Tales, will release his much anticipated debut album and Kennebec will become part of an internationally respected roster including Khraungbin, Leifur James and Ash Walker. On ‘Departure’, organic beats and soaring string lines envelope the listener with a dreamful kind of optimism. New single ‘Seasons Change’ is a silky myriad of sounds, textures and techniques that melt against a backdrop of subtle electronics, while ‘Kalahari’ glistens with curiosity and adventure as magnetic strings meet with a mosaic of horns. Elsewhere, the melancholic and wistful moods of ‘Wellspring’ provide a moment of reflection before the warm, fuzzy, feel good grooves of ‘Quest’, embellished by flutes and sax, venture into more overt atmospherics and fluid modulations. In addition to the Kennebec project, Phillips has enjoyed working on and composing the music for numerous feature films, shorts, national parks films, documentaries (including 2017’s National Geographic ‘From the Ashes’), advertisements and video games. Films Phillip’s has worked on have screened and are set to screen at the Toronto, Napa Valley and Big Sky film festivals as well as National Geographic and more. NIGHT TIME STORIES CD | LP
Session Victim Neddledrop The 11-track album titled “Needledrop” provides a suite of both uplifting and easy-listening moments, refined and understated individually yet cohesively crafted with the honest musicianship and inarguable credentials that we know of production duo Session Victim. The German pair of Hauke Freer and Matthias Reiling are no strangers to releasing quality long-format albums and while rising through a discerning community of DJ’s have previously released three consecutive albums on tastemaker label Delusions of Grandeur culminating in 2017’s “Listen To Your Heart”. Their latest and fourth studio album via the label Night Time Stories (the London based sister label to the coveted LateNightTales) marks a notable move towards the home listening dynamics of their career counterparts such as Nightmares on Wax and Portishead that have played such a strong influence in Session Victims variety of output over the last decade. As accomplished producers, Session Victim have been intent on delivering a characteristic body of work for uninterrupted easy listening and with Needledrop have landed with significant inspiration from the engaging jazz and soul compositions that found their way into early 2000’s trip hop. Chaouche Safe The debut full length album from electronic-influenced singer-songwriter Chaouche, a haunting and spine-tingling set of songs strung together with strings, programmed beats and bass, her impressive vocals and an obsession with reverb and delay. “The overarching theme of my songs is “healing". Collectively my songs contribute to a greater understanding of particular issues I found overbearing and traumatising as a child and young adult. Each song is dedicated to a memory or experience that has come from a negative source that’s ultimately been turned into a strength." Night Time Stories CD | LP
Ash Walker Aquamarine A heavyweight astral shower of rhythm and vibes, Ash Walker’s third album ‘Aquamarine’ is set for release on 19th July via Night Time Stories. Ash’s production output is similarly exploratory: his journeys have taken him far and wide, from tunnels under the river Thames to recording local percussionists in the Atlas mountains of Morocco. Inspired by a deep dive of sounds from artists including Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, King Tubby, Bo Diddley, 4Hero, J Dilla, Pete Rock, Curtis Mayfield, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich; his first two albums, ‘Augmented 7th’ (2015) and ‘Echo Chamber’ (2016) gained attention from the likes of BBC 6 Music DJs Gilles Peterson, Don Letts, Gideon Coe and Clash Maga- zine, XLR8R and MIMS. Aquamarine’ is a projection and culmination of all he’s ab- sorbed. A cosmic explosion of sound and colour, rhythm, shape and patterns. The arrival of an unassuming dreamer now projecting his unique flavour of expression. ‘Aqua- marine’ is the take-off of this audial spaceship, a sound discovered in the grooves of thousands of records, united in one. A meditation designed to inspire good energy, Ash hopes to bring a sense of calm and tranquility to the listener amongst the chaos of life. Recorded at home with the freedom of time and space, it combines analogue with digital, and a fondness for normally unwanted shapes and textures such as fuzz, hiss and crackle. “My previous albums have felt to me more like ventures on land. This one feels more like a deep sea voyage into the subconscious. Living to dream with visions of gran- deur. Manifesting a beautiful path to walk on. It was inspired by everything around me, from friends and family to art and design, engineering and architecture, move- ment and how we use our five senses. I love to try and push my own boundaries of what I perceive to be right and wrong, seeing mistakes as innovations, and obstacles as inspiration.” Highlights on the album include ‘Under The Sun’, ‘Time’ and ‘Finishing Touch’, all of which feature the smooth and silky voice of Laville. Themes of metaphysical exploration and transportation re-occur in the cosmic jazz of ‘Brave New World’ and the smoked beats on ‘Come With Us’. Also featured across the album are trumpet and flugel- horn genius Yazz Ahmed, bassist Marc Cyril (Keziah Jones, Jr Walker & The All Stars) and renowned musician and producer Jonathan Shorten. Having already graced the stages of some of the biggest UK festivals as well as as The Jazz Cafe and Rich Mix, The Ash Walker Experience is a formidable six piece live lineup. Ash has collaborated with Ezra Lloyd-Jackson to turn each performance into a vibrant, multi-sensory experience combining live reactive projections and carefully crafted frequency complimenting fragrances. Chaouche Progression EP Singer/musician/producer Aisha Chaouche follows her debut album 'Safe' with ‘Progression’, set for release on limited edition coloured 10” vinyl through Late Night Tales’ artist label Night Time Stories on 2nd November 2018. Aisha’s striking vocals sit centre-stage among her production of manipulated piano, electronic beats, sub-bass, sound effects and cello. Developed from an initial musical concept; melodies, structures and sounds bloom, exchange and reprise roles across the tracks, the EP evolving into a suite of four parts - the vocal tracks (‘Progression’, ‘Resolution’) balanced by instrumentals (‘It Will Come In Time’, ‘Epilogue’). “The EP is about a natural progression, discovering courage and concurring fears. A small step in the right direction. A true understanding of my strengths and weaknesses that makes me feel much more emotionally balanced and focused.” - Aisha Chaouche. Signing to Night Time Stories on the strength of a Soundcloud demo, Chaouche's debut album ‘Safe’ was released in June 2018. The album chronicles events that occured in her formative years and the catharsis that occurred through her songwriting, the 12 tracks described as “heartbreaking and spine tingling hymns” (Wonderland Magazine), having “weightless, otherworldly qualities” (Uncut), “richly textured sonic grandeur” (Bristol Live Magazine) and “channeling the hymnal qualities of Cat’s Eyes, with the dense vocals of Medúlla-era Björk” (The Line Of Best Fit). Khruangbin Hasta El Cielo (Con Todo El Mundo in Dub) Amazing dub version from Jamaican legend Scientist, of Khruangbin's excellent second full length album Con Todo El Mundo, one of our favourite albums from 2018. “For us, Dub has always felt like a prayer. Spacious, meditative, able to transport the listener to another realm. The first dub albums we listened to were records mixed by Scientist featuring the music of the Roots Radics. Laura Lee learned to play bass by listening to Scientist Wins the World Cup. His unique mixing style, with the emphasis on space and texture, creates the feeling of frozen time; it was hugely influential to us as a band. To be able to work alongside Scientist, a legend in the history of dub, is an honor. This is our dub version of Con Todo El Mundo.” - Khruangbin Night Time Stories 7" | CD | LP
Khruangbin Con Todo El Mundo "Addictive, deep, psychedelic, funk-blues-surf-dub-rock, inspired by historical Iranian and Mediterranean music. Whenever we have it playing in the shop it gets snapped up immediately." - Mike Khruangbin are a band inspired by non-Western music of many stripes, taking what they like from all sorts of cultures. Second album Con Todo El Mundo hones in on Iran and the Mediterranean in particular, whipping up some soulful funky storms as they do so. Night Time Stories CD | LP
