Med School: Graduation Various Artists After thirteen years and over ninety releases, Med School has stacked the chairs and closed its doors. As a final farewell to the label, the "Med School: Graduation" compilation celebrates the life of Hospital Records’ once sister label, as well as the musicians and culture that defined it, with 23 brand new tracks from label stalwarts such as Bop, Keeno, Etherwood and Whiney as well as the new blood that was always so important to the label’s experimental output. In Med School fashion, the album brings together a myriad of drum & bass stylings and beyond. From the microfunk movements of Bop to Illexandra’s warped emergency warnings, Lakeway’s upfront grime beats to the unique electronic musings of Frederic Robinson, A.Fruit and Kimyan Law. Representing the serene side of Med School is Etherwood's "Nowhere To Go But Everywhere", alongside beautiful contributions from Keeno, Natus and Polaris. The tribal infusions of Royalston's stepper "Mark's Shibari Groove" and Lung's techno-fused rabbit hole "Stop Crying" switch up the pace to reflect the breadth of Med School's outputs. The compilation also calls back to the very beginnings of the label with a special VIP treatment of S.P.Y's first release in the Hospital camp, MEDIC1 "Black Flag". Whiney not only brings in his deep new stepper "Close To You" but is also the man behind the continuous mix on the album, seamlessly bringing together all 23 tracks for one final salute to Med School Music. "Medschool was an amazing label for taking risks. from Syntax to The Erised and everything in between.. Without risks and new talent we cannot grow. Without you believing in our risks and new talent we are nothing" HOSPITAL RECORDS LTD 10" | CD | LP
Bop X Subwave Love & Other Drugs EP Two of Russia’s finest drum & bass producers have combined forces for an exciting new project. St Petersburg’s Microfunk mastermind Bop, and Moscow’s minimalistic groove guru Subwave, unite for their debut collaborative release ‘Love & Other Drugs’. With their elegant approach to drum & bass, this four-track EP fuses futuristic indie-electronica, 2-step UK garage, glitchy beats and 80’s inspired vocal stylings. Progressive euphoria is the name of the game in ‘Teardrops’ as Bop x Subwave pick apart the structure of D+B in this warm, delicate and hypnotic glitch number. Following suit is ‘Space Warp’ - darker with eerie undertones, packaged as a sub-heavy stepper. The second half of ‘Love & Other Drugs’ sees the duo branch out beyond the realms of traditional D+B. The bittersweet ballad ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ is kitted out with a definitive 80’s style. Seeing the EP home is ‘The Touch’ with the syncopated beatwork of 2-step UK Garage, complete with skippy breaks and snappy vocal sampling. In the decade since the release of Hospital Records’ ‘Future Sound Of Russia’ LP, Bop and Subwave have produced an impressive array of tracks across Hospital Records, Med School, Liquicity, Shogun Audio, Metalheadz and Microfunk, cementing their reputations for going beyond the boundaries of D+B. Keep your eyes peeled for more collaborative musings from Bop x Subwave in 2020. HOSPITAL RECORDS LTD 12"
London Elektricity Building Better Worlds Following six studio albums of funk-driven loungecore, Hospital Records’ head honcho London Elektricity embarks on the boldest musical adventure of his 30-year career with his seventh long-player ‘Building Better Worlds’. It began in a Forest Hill cafe in 2017 where London Elektricity adoringly browsed through a series of Benjamin Beech’s photography of perfectly untouched, derelict buildings and towns in Japan, Taiwan and China. “Many of the images show what has been, what could have been and what will be. The duality of beauty and melancholia within appealed to me immensely.” Each track was married to a photo, to join the sights to sounds from each of his tales of ‘Building Better Worlds.’ Leading the voyage is the orchestral masterpiece ‘Final View From The Rooftops’, that’s been 13 years in the making and is the “most unusual piece of D+B” [he’s] ever made”, featuring the incredible operatic talent of Cydnei B. ‘Build A Better World’ is a smooth drum & bass sonnet with the vocals of Hospital family favourite Emer Dineen. “The beauty of this song lies in its simplicity, but also its duality. I'll leave you to work out what the lyrics are really about… They are some of the darkest lyrics I've come across in years.” Another special moment is the feature of London Elektricity’s youngest son, The Secretary-General. The talented nine-year-old takes no ‘Time To Think’ as he flawlessly flows through Inja’s lyrics with the ever-vibrant MC following suit, bringing the track full-circle across generations.
