Watermelon Sun
The second Hello Skinny album, Watermelon Sun conjures images of the languorous, dreamy escapism its title suggests. Channelling influences including UK jazz, New Jersey house and Chicago footwork, it’s the melodies – played on trombone, tenor sax and the keys – which are the bright-shining, consistent thread throughout. The solo project of esteemed drummer Tom Skinner (whose other recent projects include Sons of Kemet and Owiny Sigoma Band), the album features influential trombone player and composer Peter Zummo (a friend and collaborator of Arthur Russell, who’s recently released new material on Glasgow’s Optimo label). Arriving at a moment when blurred genres and disparate styles are increasingly being embraced in UK venues and clubs, the moment is ripe for an album which embraces that open-minded attitude. Informed and shaped by the collaboration with Zummo, it bridges internet-mutated dance music with a continent-spanning jazz sensibility – reimagining that underground New York legacy for London in 2017.

Icy Roads (Stacked)
Wildly talented keys player Joe Armon-Jones is back with new single ‘Icy Roads (Stacked)’, a head-spinning blend of luminous jazz-funk synths, off-kilter drums and a languorous, ear-worm bassline. Featuring in-demand kit man KwAkE bAsS (who’s worked with Kate Tempest, Sampha and Joey Bada$$) and bassist Mutale Chashi (part of KOKOROKO), this is a tight trio hitting all the right notes. It features killer artwork nodding to Thrustera Herbie Hancock. Plus the vinyl comes backed with an exclusive b-side, the gloriously loose and languid ‘Aquarius’.
It follows celebrated 2018 debut album “Starting Today”, praised by Pitchfork, Loud & Quiet and The Wire, the latter describing it as “bass-rich music hustle straight out of the London soul-jazzdance lineage.” He’s performed on Boiler Room, Worldwide FM and toured across the UK and Europe, including a sold out hometown show atLondon’s Village Underground. Away from his solo project, he’s a co-founder of Ezra Collective, regularly plays with London peers like Nubya Garcia, and has toured with the likes of Ata Kak and Pharoah Monch.
Brownswood Recordings - Brownswood Recordings is the independent record label founded by DJ, record collector and broadcaster Gilles Peterson. Started in 2006, it’s a platform for new artists and music creatives, as well as an outlet for established acts to do something different. Restless and open-minded, the label has championed independent, eclectic music from the UK and beyond.

Radio Highlife
Auntie Flo joins the Brownswood roster to deliver his third and most ambitious album to date. The Glasgow-raisednproducer, of Goan-Kenyan heritage, has often featured collaborators from different spots he’s visited, and this new record takes that approach to another level. Contributions come from a globetrotting cast of friends, including Laurie Pitt, of Glasgow’s Golden Teacher, Senegalese multi-instrumentalist Mama nDiack, UK producer and singer Andrew Ashong and Cuban percussionist Yissy Garcia.
It arrives as the natural companion piece to his Radio Highlife show on Worldwide FM, the online station run by Brownswood boss Gilles Peterson. Regularly touring to DJ in various cities around the world, it’s a pursuit that’s gone hand-in-hand with the global slant of his music – with the local radio often being his first introduction to new cities. It follows in the path of Glasgow’s Highlife club night which he co-founded, playing music from West Africa and Latin America which broke out of the city’s house and techno mould. Likewise, his own music has always been laced with percussion, ideas and inspirations that reflect a far-reaching perspective.
His previous long-players, Theory of Flo and Future Rhythm Machine, were released on the Glasgow-based Huntleys & Palmers imprint. His dancefloor-minded singles have found a home on labels like Sofrito, Kompakt and Mule Musiq. His music, his DJ sets and the influential club night have drawn acclaim from publications like The Guardian, FACT and The Wire.
