bvdub Drowning in Daylight Apollo welcomes ambient legend bvdub AKA San Franciscan Brock Van Wey for a new album 'Drowning in Daylight'. Van Wey debuts on Apollo with his stunning new album‘ Drowning in Daylight , exploring cavernous soundscapes on a grand canvas that throb with a delicate intimacy. A stalwart DJ and promoter of the halcyon 90s San Francisco rave scene, Van Wey fled to China in the early 2000s to escape the curdling of his musical dreams as the scene became more commercial. Since his return he’s been incredibly prolific in his creation, etching out peerless ambient works that have captivated listeners with their delicate melody and fascinating textures through releases for the likes of echospace, Kompakt and Styrax - 2018's A Different Definition of Love marks his 30th bvdub album to date. Classically trained in piano and violin as a child, Van Wey’s symphonic approach to ambience is truly remarkable. Epic in it’s scale with each of it’s 4 tracks clocking in around the 20 minute mark, Drowning In Daylight envelops the listener in swathes of nostalgic pads and nested layers of distortion, strings and haunted voices. ‘Drowning In Daylight’ could well be Van Wey’s crowning achievement to date and a testament to the power of instrumental abstract music to emotionally engulf the listener. Synkro Changes Having made a name for himself on the dubstep scene Synkro aka Joe McBride now pulls in so many varied influences that his work finds its roots in bass music whilst continuously crossing genres!from the lush pads and rolling arpeggio pulse of the intro, to the understated dubstep meets ambient/balearic glory of the title track to the more muscular ‘Let Me go’ - awash with cavernous, soulful vocals and melancholic strings, to the epic, hymn like D&B ballad ‘Body Close’ featuring the dulcet vocals of Lyves, Synkro once again proves his effortless ability to create cinematic textures and surreal sonic vistas in long form. Eskmo Sol Second album from LA prodcuer Eskmo who supported 65daysofstatic in 2010! Inspired by our life giving planetary body, "SOL" is a masterful meditation on human emotional plane as effected by planetary bodies. Angelides has delivered perhaps his strongest statement yet. SOL’s epic grandeur bears the traces of Angelides’s recent work composing orchestral pieces for live performance with the LA based Echo Society. "From the moody cinematic opening of ‘SpVce’ and exhalting synth melodies of 'Combustion', to the touching delicacy of the watery ballad ‘Blue And Grey’ to 'Mind Of War’’s tromping existential digi-funk, the heartbreaking piano paen of ‘Tamara’, to the snarling drone saturation of the title track, to the beaming, epic euphoria of ‘The Sun Is A Drum’ it’s clear that this is a record that is a truly cinematic experience. Aphex Twin / AFX Selected Ambient Works 85-92 Re-press of Aphex Twin's third ever release. Originally released in 1992 on the Belgian sub-label of R&S, Apollo. can't believe this album is over 20 years old now, a piece of timeless techno based electronica. Nestled in these simple, undeniably danceable tracks are the roots of contemporary IDM. And despite its somewhat primitive origins, the final product remains among the most interesting ever created with a keyboard and a computer. – 9.4/10 Pitchfork Apollo CD | LP
