Boca 45
Freed From Desire
'Freed From Desire' is Nat Tate's cover of a dance anthem featuring Waldo's Gift and Yolanda Quartey (AKA Yola, fresh from playing Sister Rosetta in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis movie), reworked into future funk classic by Boca 45. Guitar riffs and rolling beats dance alongside one hell of a vocal performance from Yolanda. Delivering an interpretation with such gravitas that it feels like it could actually be the original. Over on the flip, 'Suki's Revenge PT 2' is a musical masterclass, from the haunting horn hooks to organ riffs and hip-hop beats, this is a classic Boca 45 style party rocker. A worthy addition to the much loved 'Bombs' series from Bombstrikes. Both tracks feature on upcoming compilation – Funk N' Beats. Vol 10 (Curated by Boca 45).

Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band
Hotline Bling
The remarkable (and mysterious) German steel pan group Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band deliver another single while they work on their fourth studio album. First up is a brilliant cover version of Drake’s 2016 global smash hit ‘Hotline Bling’, while on the reverse is a take on their Big Crown labelmates El Michels Affair’s ‘Murkit Gem’.

Smoove
I Like It / Vapors
Smoove & DJP team up to deliver another Wack release - this one pays tribute to the iconic HIP HOP CONNECTION magazine from back in the day with its fitting late 80’s artwork. Smoove gets busy on the A side utilising original multitracks from a USA R&B anthem alongside a Brand Nubian rap star! DJP flips things up on the other side with his version of Vapors - a solid beat with plenty of piano hooks. strictly for the heads!

Ike Turner / Nick Bike
Funky Mule
A new label focusing on old funk/soul jams with the first 7" featuring Ike Turner’s Funky Mule "an enormous break which was a fave amongst Drum & Bass producers like Goldie, 4 Hero etc. It originally appeared on Ike’s LP “A Black Man’s Soul” on Pompeii Records back in ’69 but amazingly never appeared on a 45"

Queensbridge vs Brooklyn
Big week for Jonathan 'Smoove' Watson this week, with a reissue of his 2009 classic 'Beggerman' he created with regular partner in crime John Turrell, with whom since 2007 he has headed up a funk/soul/jazz band from North East England. Now he serves up this wicked funk edit on UK label Wack Records, a label he's very much synonymous with. On the A side we have the strong lyrical delivery of Biz Markie on 'Queensbridge', followed on the flip with the block rocking beats of Herma Puma's 'Brooklyn' (Smoove mix).

Heroes of Limbo
Watch Out Now / Try Again
Heroes Of Limbo strike again with two stunning interpretations of hiphop and R&B staples on one 45. Smooth's 'T.R.O.Y.', moving all copies on release day. Here the reimagine the Beatnuts unmistakable 'Watch Out Now' and Aaliyah's smash hit 'Try Again' in a their hypnotic, polyrhythmic afrobeat-inspired style. A sure shot double sided slice of musical pineapples.
