That’s the only way to explain the specificity of Four Tet and Madlib’s collaboration, in this special album that showcases a two-decade long friendship that has resulted in an album that follows Madlib’s classics like Quasimoto’s The Unseen, Madvillainy and his Pinata and Bandana albums with Freddie Gibbs. “A few months ago I completed work on an album with my friend Madlib that we’d been making for the last few years. He is always making loads of music in all sorts of styles and I was listening to some of his new beats and studio sessions when I had the idea that it would be great to hear some of these ideas made into a Madlib solo album. Not made into beats for vocalists to use but instead arranged into tracks that could all flow together in an album designed to be listened to start to finish. I put this concept to him when we were hanging out eating some nice food one day and we decided to work on this together with him sending me tracks, loops, ideas and experiments that I would arrange, edit, manipulate and combine. Two double albums housed in a beautiful single sleeves Siblings and Siblings 2 have been a long time coming being primarily written between 2014-2016. Siblings and Siblings 2 have 13 hauntingly beautiful, impressionistic tracks apiece, the records draw on the composer’s main musical interests - film composition, ambient, post-classical, post-rock and electronica - combining grandeur and intimacy, broad brushstrokes and subtle detail, minimalism and maximalism. Iglooghost Lei Line Eon Double LP is on 'transparent marbled' coloured vinyl. The second album from experimental electronic producer Iglooghost, following on from Neo Wax Bloom. Energised, fantastical, unique and definitely a little bit bonkers. If you're into the likes of Flying Lotus then check this out. Lei Line Eon - written and produced entirely by Iglooghost is the creative polymath's follow up to his breakthrough debut album Ne? Wax Bloom. The sophomore album is a product of Iglooghost integrating a lost tradition he has spent his time researching called Lei Music with the laptop music he is known for. The performance of Lei Music has extraordinary effects and whilst there is no clear explanation of why - some believe it could be related to a variety of properties unique to Dorset. Lei Line Eon features collaborations with LOLA and BABii, the latter who he has worked with alongside Kai Whiston collectively as 'Gloo' - creating clothing, club nights and strange online artefacts. Speaking on the album Iglooghost says “I wrote Lei Line Eon after studying my hometown’s secretive tradition of Lei Music - a mysterious subgenre that summons floating lifeforms. I wanted to make a slow-motion squelching giga-detailed opus that smells like granite & perfume.” Gloo LP

Sonic Boom Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough The remixed edition of the latest Sonic Boom album. Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough includes remixes of six tracks from All Things Being Equal and two tracks previously released exclusively in Japan. The album opens just like the original, with “Just Imagine”in its remixed form. The modular synthesizer at its foundation sounds familiar, but as the song progresses it branches out into various veins of sparkling embellishments and deep humming to truly expand the world that the song attempts to envision. On the albums’title track “Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough,” Kember’s instrumentation mirrors the interactions he wishes to inspire; synthesizers responding and building on one another, a conversation of sorts that the human world currently seems to avoid. Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough sets itself up to be a grooving, night-time record, while carrying on Sonic Boom’s sense of urgency to assess our relationship with the world. As Sonic Boom revisits his last album, he exposes the arteries and bones of his past work and shares its raw, exciting potential. The result is a re-textured and re-colored new set of songs, emphasizing Sonic Boom’s ability to make a sonically expansive album feel distinctly impactful for anyone who listens closely. Visionist A Call to Arms Visionist’s first release for Mute is a hypnotic elegy. A Call to Arms is Visionist’s third album release and where previously the artist used his vocals as samples, we hear his singing voice in the form of song and lyric for the first time. Along with the addition of Visionist’s vocals, the album is host to a varied list of collaborators including Haley Fohr (Circuit des Yeux) and Morgan Simpson (Black Midi). For Visionist (aka Louis Carnell) each album is a chapter in a bigger storyline, and this new album builds upon 2015’s debut, Safe [PAN] and its follow up, Value [2017 / Big Dada Recordings]. Carnell says, “With every project I want to test myself, so with this ethos, I expand the landscape of sound I have created over the years. On A Call to Arms I have furthered my musical direction in terms of collaboration in order to bring new layers of sonics, dynamics, energies and ideas.” Mute CD | LP

For avoidance of doubt, the centre is a standard spindle size, and not dinked. The severity of grief often comes across most clearly in art. What is the purpose of art but to depict human emotions for others to understand and empathise with? On his gripping new album For Those I Love, David Balfe offers a highly personalised portrait of love, loss, confusion, nostalgia and pain – that is to say, the Dublin songwriter/producer walks you through the early stages of mourning. Each savage emotion comes across as tangible and real. Balfe makes spoken word music over urbane electronica that takes its cues from alternative hip-hop and various forms of club music. His heavily accented delivery and penchant for familiar Dublin cadences means writing can only be set in one place, elevating the album among the great modern works set in the city. A project that started out as an ode to friendship was remodeled under a tragic cloud. Balfe conceived of For Those I Love as a solo project when he was still a member of punk band Burnt Out. Its purpose was to capture the tight-knit friendships – that is, the beauty of the relationships that exist between groups of young men that often go unspoken. Particularly, he wanted to depict his connection with best friend and Burnt Out bandmate, the poet Paul Curran. Tragically, Curran died in early 2018.
