Dr Rubberfunk
Saturday 29th February at Banquet Records, 4:00pm
Following the release of his new full length album titled My Life At 45, the awesome Dr Rubberfunk stops by the shop for a Saturday afternoon set.
Having established himself in funk, soul, blues and jazz circles with a ton of high calibre releases, the good doctor holds a reputation for quality productions, with a hands-on approach, both in front of, and behind the mixing desk, as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and producer.
The new album brings together stunning vocals from John Turrell, Izo FitzRoy and Stephanie Whitelock, whilst the instrumental tracks, showcasing the talents of long-time collaborators Jim Oliver, Jonathan James and Ben Castle, make it clear just what a crack production outfit the Doctor has put together.

Following the release of their new album, Spanish Love Songs visit the shop for a lunch time set.
Their second full length album, titled Brave Faces Everyone, follows on from their triumphant 2017 debut Schmaltz, seeing them offer up another dose of their anthemic indie-punk mixed with some heartstring-tugging emo influences. Fans of The Menzingers, Tigers Jaw and The Hotelier should be checking this band out.
"This album is us honing in on what we think makes our band resonate with people — namely, the feeling that you're not alone. These are songs about looking outward and finding that, for all our differences, most of us are just trying to get by as the world is going to hell around us.
"We don’t have any grand ambitions beyond that — we just want people to feel acknowledged. There’s comfort in knowing we’re on the same sinking ship. We want the album to be a knowing nod and a way to make the world a slightly more bearable, even if it’s just for 40 minutes."
Tickets are for collection from our shop on the day of the in-store, please bring your order number with you. Albums will be posted unless you select 'Collect In Shop' when checking out.

Porridge Radio
Wednesday 11th March at Banquet Records, 6:00pm
Celebrating the release of their debut full length record titled Every Bad, the indie / post-punk fuelled quartet from Brighton, Porridge Radio visit Kingston to play in the shop.
Every Bad is a personal and intimate record, one born of soul-searching down at the beach. But its reach can (and should) be much further than that. These are lyrics that can unite friend groups and create manifestos to pin to bedroom walls, and the music that backs it all is widescreen, bright, and ambitious enough to take Porridge Radio to rooms as big as they deserve to be in. If the recent London show is anything to go by, the messages of this band are ones that can provide real, tangible hope. Across Every Bad, and in the very fiber of Porridge Radio, is the kind of fire that makes you get up and try all over again tomorrow.

Jeffrey Lewis
Friday 17th January at Banquet Records, 6:00pm
Following on from the release of Bad Wiring, Jeffrey Lewis plays in the shop. Jeffrey has received jaw-dropping praise from practically every major news and music outlet over the years, as well as awed testimonials from the likes of David (Silver Jews) Berman, Jarvis (Pulp) Cocker, Ben (Death Cab For Cutie) Gibbard, Will Oldham and others… and this new album “Bad Wiring” makes it completely clear why. In all of indie rock there is no force like Jeffrey Lewis. Although mostly recognized for his lyrical skills (as well as his illustration/comic book skills), the secret weapon in Lewis’s arsenal has been his slow evolution from DIY folkie in the late 90s to barn-burning indie-rock live sensation. New band name The Voltage is a bit of a slight-of-hand, as the musicians are the same bassist, Mem Pahl, and same drummer, Brent Cole (also of the Moldy Peaches), that Jeffrey has been touring the world with for the past four years as “Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts.” But Jeffrey continues his tradition of using a new band name for each release… and as Jeffrey says, “everybody knows most good bands have a ‘v’ in their name… Velvets, Nirvana, Pavement, Vaselines, Violent Femmes, Camper Van Beethoven, Modern Lovers, etc!” Recent Jeffrey Lewis band names like “The Rain”, “Los Bolts” and “The Voltage” are also in reference to the fact that Jeffrey’s middle name is Lightning, the result of being born on the Lower East Side in the 1970s to hippie parents. It was almost his first name but got moved to the middle name when he was born! The album was recorded and produced in Nashville by Roger Moutenot, the man responsible for producing all of the classic Yo La Tengo albums. Moutenot, who also worked on Lou Reed’s “Magic and Loss” album, and Sleater Kinney’s “Hot Rock” album was definitely the right man to capture these twelve new Lewis songs in the studio. As Lewis explains, “As an experience of working with a producer, it was a dream come true. I obviously worship a number of the records Roger had produced in the past, so I specifically sought him out. The fact that he’s in Nashville was just accidental, we would have traveled to record with him anywhere. Now when people hear we made our album in Nashville, everybody’s like, oh, I guess this is your country album…” In-store Grade B. Pinegrove
Friday 24th January at Banquet Records, 6:00pm
Just after the release of their third full length album titled Marigold, Evan from the folky-emo outfit Pinegrove returns to the shop for a solo acoustic set.
Pinegrove’s new album begins with a breath and ends with a shimmering exhalation. In between is Marigold, an urgent, multivalent meditation—and an expanded take on the blend of alt-country, indie rock and cerebral humanism that’s inspired the band’s ardent fan community. Marigold marks their Rough Trade Records debut, offering what songwriter Evan Stephens Hall calls a “heart-first” perspective.
Those familiar with Pinegrove will recognize signature elements of the band’s sound: literary yet conversational lyrics, geometrically interlocking guitars, the dynamic shifting shadows of rhythm and structure. But this effort marks the most spacious, bold, and well defined iteration of the project yet.

Priority will be given to anyone who orders a copy of Marigold from us.

October Drift
Wednesday 29th January at Banquet Records, 6:00pm
Celebrating the release of their debut album titled Forever Whatever, the heavy-indie quartet October Drift play in the shop.
An immersive wall of distortion envelopes the powerful fragility of frontman Kiran Roy’s vocals, while he paints a verbal landscape of introspection, despair and hope amid a sonic palette that evokes both the driving, spacious absorptivity of My Bloody Valentine and the poetic, visceral honesty of Nick Cave’s lyricism. “It’s a song about trying to keep your head above the water,” says Kiran. “It was written at a time when everyone around me seemed to be moving on with their lives and I was stuck in the same place. Its basically about the fears of getting older and underachieving, but trying not to let it get to you and even staying optimistic in spite of those fears” ‘Losing My Touch’ follows the band’s previous singles ‘All Broken Down’ and ‘Come And Find Me’, released to widespread acclaim last year. With influences as varied as The National, Radiohead, Interpol and Nick Drake, their heavy, pop inflected rock is delivering a rejuvenating injection of fresh blood to the genre. October Drift’s debut album, details of which will be revealed soon, is a cathartic collection of tracks encompassing themes of loneliness, fear and ultimate positivity, and builds on the solid foundation that they have built over years of touring and writing to cement themselves as an important and powerful new presence. Physical Education’s Justin Lockey says of their signing; “October Drift are one of those bands... there's maybe a handful at best in every generation of guitar bands.
