NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE
Thanksgiving In New York City [Black Friday 19]
Limited Black Friday release available in store from Friday 29th November. Any remaining stock will be available online from Saturday 30th November at 7:00am. Strictly 1 per customer.
Recorded live to 2 track tape at New York City’s Academy of Music. Previously unissued performance featuring Buddy Cage on pedal steel guitar with guest guitarist David Rea (Gordon Lightfoot, Fariport Convention). Taken directly off the master reels in the NRPS Archive and mastered by David Glasser at Airshow Mastering. Liner notes by NRPS Historian Rob Bleetstein with rare photos. The New Riders of The Purple Sage were regarded as America’s favorite psychedelic cowboy band in the early 1970s. What had started as a chance for the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia to learn pedal steel guitar as he accompanied singer John “Marmaduke” Dawson and his unique songbook of classic Americana tunes, had become its own entity by 1972. With the addition of Buddy Cage on pedal steel to replace Garcia, 1972 saw two studio releases in the forms of Powerglide and Gypsy Cowboy. Emerging from the shadow of the Grateful Dead after opening countless shows for them, not only where the New Riders becoming a bona fide live act to contend with, but their performances were earning them a loyal and rabid following on the East Coast, especially in the New York Tri-State area. Captured at the late show from November 23, 1972, at the Academy of Music, Thanksgiving In New York City features the band in the midst of an energetic and highly regarded tour. Along with Dawson classics like Henry, Portland Woman, and Last Lonely Eagle, lead guitarist David Nelson and bassist Dave Torbert also bring some Bluegrass (She’s No Angel) and R&B (I Don’t Need No Doctor, Willie And The Hand Jive) to the mix. An evening with New Riders of the Purple Sage in downtown Manhattan offered music fans a musical panorama that continually upped the ante of the potential of country meets rock with a psychedelic twist. This concert from 1972 began what would be an annual engagement over the Thanksgiving holiday in New York City for the following three years. It was a family vibe of a whole other nature when the New Riders came to town. Crank it up and enjoy the musical feast that is Thanksgiving In New York City!

That one release alone would have us jumping over the moon, but our next announcement has us flying out of the solar system. A labour of love that will be a true godsend for longtime Groovies and newcomers alike, BETWEEN THE LINES: THE COMPLETE JORDAN/WILSON SONGBOOK ‘71-81 compiles, for the first time ever, all the original songs written by Groovies Cyril Jordan and Chris Wilson in the classic second version of the band.
Announcing new FLAMIN’ GROOIVES compilation. Ditching the covers and focusing on the Groovies’ original songs of the era. New Flamin' Groovies compilation, BETWEEN THE LINES: THE COMPLETE JORDAN/WILSON SONGBOOK ‘71-81 compiles, for the first time ever, all the original songs written by Groovies Cyril Jordan and Chris Wilson in this classic second version of the band.
The Groovies gave themselves a major reboot in 1971 when a then 18-year-old Chris Wilson replaced Roy Loney as the band’s frontman and Cyril Jordan’s writing partner. This was the formation of the group that made that journey to England at the behest of UA – helping set the scene for punk - and which, with a couple of line-up changes along the way, ended up signing to Sire Records and making three brilliant albums - Shake Some Action, Now, and Jumpin’ In The Night - before eventually running out of steam following Wilson’s departure in 1981. It’s the incarnation that headlined over the Ramones in London on July 4 1976 in London, but which then had to settle for being a massive influence on the nascent form of both power pop and all manner of ’60s influenced groups after the dictates of a post-punk world decided that their glorious rock’n’roll was not going to be the next big thing.

I'LL HAVE A... BUCKET OF BRAINS [Black Friday 19]
Limited Black Friday release available in store from Friday 29th November. Any remaining stock will be available online from Saturday 30th November at 7:00am. Strictly 1 per customer.
Grown Up Wrong! Records is thrilled beyond belief to announce two forthcoming releases by quite possibly our favourite band in the world, THE FLAMIN’ GROOVIES.
Announcing an upgrade reissue of the longlost Flamin’ Groovies collection I’ll Have A… Bucket Of Brains. Documenting the band’s stint with United Artists Records in London 1972. Grown Up Wrong! have reissued the 1995 EMI collection I’LL HAVE A... BUCKET OF BRAINS, which collects all the recordings the band made for United Artists in England in 1972 - primarily with Dave Edmunds at Rockfield in Monmouth, Wales - including “Slow Death”, “Married Woman”, “Tallahassee Lassie”, and two songs that would remain in the can until later in the decade, “Shake Some Action” and “You Tore Me Down”. This is the period that saw the band transition from punky R&B and rockabilly-inspired roots rockers to flashy Stones-types, on their way to becoming Beatles/Byrds/Stones-inspired power pop greats. This long-lost collection supposes the 1972 Groovies album that never was, and this reissue comes with greatly expanded packaging, including the original liner notes by Groovies superfan and Bucketful of Brains publisher Jon Storey alongside a new essay by fellow Groovies superfan and Barracudas guitarist Robin Wills. As an extra bonus, we also include a reprint of an over-the-top original Nick Kent feature on the band, first published in 1972 in the UK underground paper Frendz and never-before reprinted.

Something musically vital was happening in East Los Angeles when all-around entertainment guru Eddie Davis’ Rampart Records documented the fusion that became the West Coast Eastside Sound. Founded in 1961, Rampart Records is now celebrating its 58th anniversary with this box set collection. Rampart produced music unlike any other—rock & roll and rhythm and blues, but with a Mexican twist. The singles on this collection are from Rampart’s first 17 years, as the sounds changed from doo wop to R&B to garage to funk to disco. Hear East LA’s greatest hits from the West Coast’s longest running independent record company. Discover the amazing history and super-fine music from the classic Rampart Records catalogue, still going strong after 58 years! Among the gems heard on Land Of 1000 Dances is “Hector Parts 1 & 2,” a double-barreled, organ-driven instrumental by The Village Callers, which was heard on the soundtrack to Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino’s hit summer film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. Other top-flight Rampart acts surveyed include the storming, horn-driven garage soul unit The Blendells, whose cover of Stevie Wonder’s single “La La La La La” is a crate digger classic; R&B foursome The Atlantics, whose lineup included future ’70s love man Barry White; soul balladeer Ron Holden; The Soul-jers, the military-garbed duo of former Mixtures vocalists Philip Tucker and Delbert Franklin; Motown-styled vocal quartet The Four Tempos; Latin songstresses Didi Scorzo and Graciela Palafox; and funk / disco pioneers Eastside Connection. Hector Gonzalez, bassist of Eastside Connection, has overseen Rampart’s assets since Eddie Davis’ death in 1994 and co-produced Land Of 1000 Dances with Michael Minky.

Jack Penate
Thursday 28th November at New Slang, 9:00pm (18+)
Celebrating the release of his long-awaited new album, Jack Peñate plays at New Slang.
The long awaited third full length album from the awesome singer-songwriter will mark his first set of new music since 2009's Everything Is New and sees him return to New Slang 10 years after his last visit.
The album doesn’t just draw on his musical journey of the past ten years, it brings in influences from the music he heard as a child. Loaded Gun has a prechorus that Lennon and McCartney would have liked to have written. As a child his brother would play him Jungle music. There’s elements of that too. His dad ran acid house raves – that’s in there. But perhaps, the most poignant track is Gemini. With nothing more than piano, vibraphone and drum beat, the words of Peñate’s grandfather, the writer and artist Mervyn Peake, are read by his uncle Fabian. And it’s not the only family tie. The artwork for the album, and the first video, has been done by Peñate’s cousin, the acclaimed artist, Eddie Peake. “We both grew up with an uncanny focus on what we wanted to do, but had never worked together,” says Jack. His work is both incredibly joyous and melancholy, and it does something to me that music does to me too.”
Times TBC but we expect doors at 9:00pm with Jack Peñate on stage at 10:30pm
After the show, it's New Slang as usual where you can expect to hear the likes of The Cribs, Liam Gallagher, Catfish & The Bottlemen, Courteeners, Maximo Park and many more until 2AM.
CD/ticket is £12 post-paid, and other formats and combos are available.
New Slang is an over 18s event, and is strict on ID. Please bring photo ID with you on the night, whatever age you are.
New Slang is held at Pryzm, 154 Clarence St, Kingston upon Thames KT1 1QP
