Enjoy! Indies exclusive LP is on 'Ghetto Lettuce (transparent green)' coloured vinyl. The highly anticipated debut album from Yard Act.In a world of great polarity, nuance is normally the answer. We may shame and bicker and amplify our outrage, but at the core of it all, we’re all still inhabitants of the same ecosystem, most of us trying to tow the delicate line between empathy and self-preservation. If nothing and no one is purely good nor evil, true societal improvement can only come from recognizing some kind of middle groundIn many ways, Yard Act is a project that exists through the fusion of seemingly opposing entities. Old friends in a new band, they seek out shades of socio- political grey, imbibing their stories with sharp, satirical spoken-word humour. Spearheaded by James Smith (vocals) and Ryan Needham (bass), the now four-piece, completed by Sam Shjipstone (guitar) and Jay Russell (drums), have built a sound that speaks inherently to their birthplace of Leeds, West Yorkshire, and yet ties together observations from all walks of modern British life – the small-town bloke in the local pub, the anti-capitalist stuck at a desk job, the tired activist in all of us torn between easy complicity and the desire to fight. Their sound and ethos might be progressive, but it’s not about pointing fingers so much as opening eyes.

Dark Days / Peanuts
Following their debut 7” Fixer Upper / The Trapper’s Pelts, which sold out its entire 500 copy pressing on the day of release, “Dark Days / Peanuts” comes in a hand printed cover, and is available in limited edition peanut colour or standard vinyl.
Yard Act formed in Leeds in September 2019 when Ryan Needham found himself temporarily living in James Smith's spare bedroom. The two had been pub associates for years, but their new living circumstances served as a catalyst for their friendship and creative partnership which saw them fuse James' interest in spoken word with Ryan's primitive proto-punk demos using an ancient drum machine and borrowed bass guitar. They released their first material in March 2020, coinciding with you-know-what, and with just three singles (The Trapper’s Pelts, Fixer Upper and Peanuts) and three gigs to date, Yard Act have staked out a territory all their own.
Setting up their own imprint Zen F.C. they released their debut 7” which can now only be found for exorbitant sums on Discogs, they’ve scored two 6music playlists, and they’ve won a growing fanbase with their coruscating, narrative driven, spoken word dance-punk. Now girding their loins for a 2021 filled with new music, new recordings, debut novels, and (fingers crossed) plenty of live shows, Yard Act have most definitely marked our cards as one of UK’s most exciting prospects.

The Overdub
The Overdub is a reimagining of Yard Act's Mercury Prize shortlisted debut album The Overload. Yard Act approached legendary dub pioneer Mad Professor to create The Overdub, and the result is a spectacular and surprising reconstruction of their debut LP The Overdub. The Overdub is inspired by Mad Professor's dub reworking of Massive Attack's Protection and comes complete with artwork by Rufus Dayglo that might just reference that very record..Speaking about The Overdub, frontman James Smith says: "Back when I first moved to Leeds and discovered Jumbo records, I used to treat myself to a record with my student loan once every two or three weeks (bloody students, scrounging bastards). Jumbo always had (and still does have) an excellent dub/ reggae selection - and actually released reggae records on its own 'Jumbo label' imprint back in the 70s (how ace is that!?).I had a grounding in reggae from my dad who'd turned me onto the likes of Burning Spear and Linton Kwesi Johnson, but didn't really know much about dub music beyond a Bob Marley record produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry he'd given me called African Herbsman. I started dabbling in dub off the back of that. After a few choice 'Scratch' cuts and King Tubby best of, I bought the Jah Shaka meets Mad Professor record in Jumbo purely because I liked the artwork and because I thought the name was cool. What a purchase. I've been a fan ever since. From his work with Lee Scratch Perry through U-Roy and of course not forgetting his masterful reinterpretation of Massive Attack's Protection - the Mad Prof truly is a living legend and it is an absolute honour to have had him stick his dubby fingers all over The Overload. We're such a vocal heavy band by trade, so it's really ace to hear his reimagining's of the tracks largely stripped of that. His bass heavy mixes, for me, are a gorgeous reminder of what supports my ramblings, a reminder of the man I made them with, the backbone of this band, and the genesis of all these musical ideas that started off our adventure together. These mixes pay tribute to the man with 4 strings, those low end things, Mr. Ryan Needham, and whenever I hear this record, not only will I be reminded of the Mad Professor's greatness, but of our Ry's as well. NOW GO BLOW SOME SPEAKERS!"Mad Professor adds: "The Overdub is the natural title. When presented with the project, I thought to treat it in the most creative way possible, working with Joe Ariwa, Black Steel, and Horseman. Naturally with such a team, the over dubs, came before the dubs!!!"
