Neville Staple
Thursday 13th April
at Banquet Records, 7:30pm
Albums and tickets for collection at the shop, please bring your order number with you. Marking the release of his new album, Neville Staple returns to Kingston for a career-spanning DJ set in the shop. Crowned as "Ska's original rude-boy", Neville Staple is back with his new album Return Of Judge Roughneck (& Dub Specials), totally addictive and feel-good music that is made up some new material, re-workings of classic Jamaican dub hits and a few gems from Staple's back catalogue. He's an absolute legend and we're excited to have him back. Neville Staple recreates his famous Judge Roughneck character, first seen as part of the "Stupid Marriage" song from the Specials debut album on 2Tone Records. Be prepared for a super ride through classic Jamaican early reggae tunes, ska stomping rhythms and new tracks that fit perfectly with echoes of 2Tone and Bluebeat mixed with Trojan music styles. Part 2 of the album, a full set of bonus Dub remixes, takes you on a dub journey with atmospheric vibes, toasting fun and twisted song versions. In-store grade B. If you're over 18, feel free to BYOB to this event! Advance tickets will be given to anyone who orders a copy of Return Of Judge Roughneck from us. Later that night The King Blues play at New Slang. Tickets from the Neville Staple will get you free entry to that event.

Neville Staple / Long Live Kingston Carnival
Thursday 4th September
at New Slang
Edit: Thursday night is a positive celebration of all things Kingston Carnival, and not a protest against its cancellation. That's for elsewhere, but doesn't belong on Thursday night. We're very disappointed that Kingston Carnival has been cancelled for 2014. We've been publicly and personally supportive of the Save Kingston Carnival campaign. As we'd already booked The Neville Staple Band we're moving as much of the day's runnings as possible accross to New Slang just 3 days ahead of the planned date, in an event we're calling Long Live Kingston Carnival. In the spirit of the carnival vibe, we're keeping it free entry to anyone who has signed this online petition to Save Kingston Carnival. You'll need to grab a ticket in advance, and we'll be checking to make sure you have signed the petition. If you've not done so, your ticket will not be valid, but of course you can pay to get in. As well as the band. there'll be a host of carnival-related activity including a procession around the club (?!), facepainting by Sweet Cheeks, a lot of whistle-blowing, a jerk chicken stall, Brazilian drumming from Tribo (TBC), an address from Kingston Carnival founder (King) John Azah, Londond elctronic DJ Jgheab and Peace N Dub will host reggae / soca / dancehall / carnival jams til close in room 2. If you've got any more ideas, do get in touch and we'll see if we can work it into the night. The main music event is of course from living legend Neville Staple from The Specials. He's no stranger to New Slang and we welcome him back with The Neville Staple Band. With always truly brilliant performances, Neville is nothing short of a hero. "The Original Rudeboy", founder member, and singer with The Specials and later Fun Boy Three, Neville comes to Kingston to play a career-spanning set, from his new Neville Staple Band works to, of course, a good proportion of Specials classics. After Neville the main room will return to New Slang as usual where we dance to hits from Alt-J, Peace, Royal Blood, Jamie T and many more until 2AM Please Note: McClusky's is an 18+ venue, valid PHOTO ID will be required

Neville Staple DJ set / Jungle Brown / Kingston Carnival
Sunday 3rd September
at Market Place, 2:00pm
We're delighted Kingston Carnival is back for 2017. As is the norm, we're booking the later part of the main stage to close the carnival. It's a free entry, alcohol-free event in The Market Place for Kingston Race & Equalities Council.
Live hip-hop comes to us by way of London's Jungle Brown, raw UK hip hop-using sampling, live instruments and conscious lyrics and wordplay. This is proper hip-hop for the heads. Fans of Tribe, The Pharcyde and Task Force can't be missing this one.
And we're delighted to have a DJ set from one of our favourites, ska's original rudeboy, the one and only Neville Staple. No stranger to Kingston, this living legend who's spent half a century speaking for racial equality brings larger than life, positive vibes. Check out the video below for how fun these DJ sets are.
As well as music there'll be a colourful procession through town, food stalls, entertainment and much more. This is a communal celebration open to anyone of any age and it's totally free.
The music kicks off at 2pm and there's a strict curfew of 7pm.

Over the years we've been lucky to have had some legends at New Slang. Support comes from local faves The JB Conspiracy stepping away from their ska-punk tunes and doing a special ska/reggae/dub set. After Neville's set, DJ Wrong Tom will be continuing the vibe in room 2 playing his selection of dub, ska and reggae, while our residents will take us through to 2AM with indie / alt in the main room Advance tickets for this are just 5!
