Any Human Friend
The highly anticipated third full length album from indie-pop-rockers Marika Hackman, following on from her excellent 2017 I'm Not Your Man. Co-produced by David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The xx, Let’s Eat Grandma) and Marika herself.
The process of writing ‘Any Human Friend’ was an incredibly difficult one: Marika stopped being able to sleep properly, waking up in the middle of the night to write songs - but as the best songwriters do, she strengthened her own voice through the process, exploring herself and emerging with a widescreen, heavy-hitting and sexy record.
The longer recording process meant that Marika had the time to experiment in the studio, especially with electronic songs. She deployed synthesisers that recall the off-kilter, oddball hits of OMD or New Order, and places them at the heart of the album. For all the urgency of the backing music, Marika’s natural delivery and sensuous tone offers a dreamlike quality to the proceedings and allows her to look within to find answers that make sense outside.

EXTRA SET ADDED DUE TO HUGE DEMAND.To celebrate the release of the new album 'Big Sigh', Marika Hackman visits Kingston to play an in-store set.Big Sigh brings together the best of Marika’s previous works as an indie musician and adds a new layer of epic sounds and full-bodied production.Big Sigh is the “hardest record” Marika has ever made. As the title suggest, it is a relief of sorts – of sadness, of stress and lust, but mostly relief. Co-produced with Sam Petts Davies (Frank Ocean, Radiohead, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) & Charlie Andrew (Alt J, Wolf Alice, London Grammar). Lyrically there’s always romance alongside grief, with elements of vulnerability and feeling trapped. “This album took a long time to make. It was not easy, and by the time I got to the end of it I was quiet. I wanted to be away from it and let it sit in its own space. Now the dust has settled and I’ve got re-enter the world of Big Sigh, and I’m excited. Stepping into a new world, moving forward, chipping away. Breathe in, breathe out. Big sigh.” -In-store Grade B.Priority will be given to anyone who orders a copy of 'Big Sigh' from us. If there's space on the day for more people, we'll let you know!Admission will be via order number, please bring yours to the shop.

at New Slang
All tickets for collection at The Hippodrome on the evening of the show. Please bring your order number with you.
To celebrate the release of her new album Marika Hackman plays at New Slang.
The second studio album from the alternative indie-pop artist titled I'm Not Your Man takes on a stronger, gutsier sound that follows on from the debut.
It’s not the sound of silliness; it’s the sound of liberation, spontaneity, and joy. 25-year-old Hackman is feeling more herself than ever. Life isn’t necessarily funnier or happier, but when there’s cause for a joke or a big ballsy statement, she’s not holding back any more.
After the show, it's New Slang as usual where you can expect to hear the likes of Methyl Ethel, Blossoms, Savages, Mystery Jets, Wolf Alice, The Shins and many more until 2AM.
Support comes from Kam of Fake Laugh.
If you also want a copy of the new album, then combos are available here.
Please Note: The Hippodrome is an 18+ venue. Valid PHOTO ID will be required.
New Slang is held at The Hippodrome, 1 St James Road, Kingston, KT1 2AH
