Kanye West 2001 demo tape The 2001 Kanye demos now in on double LP! Thanks to this rare demo tape from 2001, we get a glimpse at rapper long before his first taste of the spotlight. The 45-minute, 14-track tape features a number of early demos that would go on to become West standbys, including “All Falls Down” (then titled “Dream Come True”), “Bring Me Down”, and “Jesus Walks”. Plus, there’s also a “gangsta” version of the unreleased “Need To Know”, additional unreleased cuts “Know The Game” and “Family Business”, and the DJ Boom freestyles “Jigga That N***a” and “I Met Oprah”. With a flow that’s clearly inspired by the revitalized gangsta rap scene of the early 2000s, West leans more toward his brooding and menacing tendencies than his thoughtful and contemplative side. Still, backed by the old-school samples he’d one day make his name with, and unafraid to speak whatever came across his mind at that second, there’s enough to prove that Kanye West was already destined for deity status LP
Kanye West College Dropout Double LP reissue of Kanye's 2004 debut album! One the most impressive and game-changing hip-hop debut since the early 90s, Kanye West magically sledgehammers home opinions on taboo topics over beats that are equally daring. The envelope-ripping beats shouldn't come as a surprise, given that he's supplied the soundscapes to monster singles by everyone from Alicia Keys ("You Don't Know My Name") to Talib Kweli ("Get By"). In West's world, rhymes about strippers, God, college life, and urban ills co-exist tidily and never come off as parodic. With jaw-dropping cameos from Jay-Z, Common, Mos Def, John Legend, and the Harlem Boys Choir, College Dropout is as explosive, provocative, and complex as rap gets. Universal LP
Kanye West Late Registration Double LP reissue of Kanye's second album, released in 2005 For haters that were eager to see Kanye West hit a sophomore slump--no such luck. Late Registration doesn't replicate the novelty of his debut, College Dropout, but otherwise, this is an impressively more mature and labored-over album. Lyrically, Kanye's only improved a notch but musically, the album sounds incredible, especially with co-producer Jon Brion helping polish the songs to perfection. Ranked on nearly every major music critic's Best of 2005 list. Universal LP
