IDER Wednesday 24th July at Banquet Records, 6:00pm To celebrate the release of their new album titled Emotional Education, IDER visit the shop to play a set of their dark, electronic-pop filled with spectacular harmonies. Themes of anxiety, identity, mental health, and the human condition run throughout. The album's 11 songs – which include singles 'Mirror', 'You've Got Your Whole Life Ahead of You Baby' and 'Brown Sugar' – are consistently intricate and intimate, but draw from a multitude of influences, reflecting the multi-instrumentalists' diverse tastes. To understand the symbiosis that exists between IDER, you need only learn how the London duo's debut album got its name. "It came from a song that I had written," says Megan Markwick, referring to the raw electro-pop anthem 'Saddest Generation', a beautiful examination of millennial malaise. "But then Lily had put in that lyric – 'Where's the emotional education we're all looking for?' And it was a penny drop moment. It's such a perfect example of the way we work, this partnership that is all entangled." "Emotional Education is what we give each other," adds Lily Somerville, "and what we're going to give you with this album." In-store Grade C. Anyone is welcome to attend, but priority will be given to anyone who orders a copy of Emotional Education from us. Tickets are for collection from the shop on the day of the in-store, please bring your order number with you. Albums will be posted unless you select 'Collect in shop' when checking out. CD | LP
Shura Thursday 15th August at Banquet Records, 6:00pm The night before her new album is released, the electro-tinged indie popper Shura returns to Kingston to play an intimate set in the shop. She was last in Kingston in 2016 at New Slang with her debut album, We're super excited to have her back and to hear some new songs from her second album titled forevher. ‘forevher,’ then, is a record born from a budding romance, covering everything from the initial pull of desire, to the giddy joy of finally being together, to recognising the moment when the connection develops from lust into something scarily meaningful. Here is a classic London-to-NYC love story, but one told through the filter of dating apps and Skype chats. And whilst how to live – and love – as a queer woman has always been integral to Shura, it’s remarkable to hear these stories twisted through such a gorgeous amalgam of influences: Joni Mitchell and Minnie Riperton, Bon Iver and Frank Ocean, Prince and Ariel Pink. Through these inspirations, Shura’s own modern, outlier perspective found a newer, more daring approach to sound and song. In-store Grade B. Priority will be given to anyone who orders a copy of forevher from us. Albums will be posted, tickets are for collection from the shop on the day of the in-store, please bring your order number with you. The Album is released 16th August. CD | LP
Bleached Friday 23rd August at Banquet Records, 6:00pm Celebrating the release of their new album, Bleached play in the shop. Don't You Think You've Had Enough? is the third full length album from the awesome garage-indie-punk-duo and we're delighted to see them return to Banquet. The resulting LP is explosive, grappling with the past; its twelve tracks mark some of the sisters’ most visceral, rawest songwriting to date -- and some of their best. The work glimmers with inspiration found in touring with the likes of The Damned and Paramore. That arena-ready pop, incisively catchy, was a palpable influence helping to push Bleached’s sound in a new direction. "Writing these songs while sober became somewhat of a spiritual experience,” Jennifer says. “Like I was connecting with a power greater than myself. I had to let go, trust the process, and allow an energy beyond my control to be present." In-store Grade C. Priority will be given to anyone who orders a copy of Don't You Think You've Had Enough? from us. All albums + tickets are for collection from the shop on the day of the in-store, please bring your order number with you. CD | LP
Idlewild Sunday 25th August at Banquet Records, 1:30pm With their new full length album out now, Idlewild play an acoustic set in the shop in August. Following on from 2015's Everything Ever Written, the wonderful Scottish rockers bring their eighth full length Interview Music. “A lot of the songs are about dreams and dreaming and the thoughts and ideas that come from this state,” says Woomble. I live in the Scottish Highlands, and between there and California you’ve got two locations that can put you in a dream like state - driving down Sunset Boulevard as the sun sets or driving over the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula as the sun rises. The world seems unreal, magical. You’re dreaming through a landscape.” In-store Grade A. Priority will be given to anyone who orders a copy of Interview Music from us. Tickets are for collection in the shop on the day of the in-store, please bring your order number with you. Albums will be posted unless you select 'Collect in shop' when checking out. CD | LP
