In hot pursuit of Skepta’s symbolic Mercury prize victory, it seems like an entire generation has fallen at grime’s feet and 2016 saw the genre continue its meteoric rise to the mainstream. From its early origins in East London council estates in the early noughties until today’s global recognition, grime’s distinct characteristic lays in its ability to stay loyal to its roots and give back to the community. Since their beginning at pirate radio station Rinse FM, where they offered a platform to burgeoning grime artists, Elijah & Skilliam have showed their dedication to the scene and built one of the genre’s most respected collective around their label Butterz. Dedicated curators, they have compiled a new volume of their essential annual compilation, Grime 2016, their 4th album to date. From Kano’s 3 Wheel Ups feat. Wiley & Giggs, taken from his critically acclaimed Made In The Manor album, singles from mainstays like Wiley, P Money, Dizzee Rascal to a variety of takes from the likes of Swindle, Last Japan, Nottingham’s own Mez, Dread D and Ninja Tune-signed The Bug, the album showcases grime’s broad diversity and the spectrum of influences coming into play in today’s outstanding productions.
